The Causal Relationship between Government Expenditure and Tax Revenue in Barbados
نویسنده
چکیده
Solving the budget deficit problem is a concern for many countries; some economists emphasized tax increases or tax cuts, while others favour spending cuts. This paper investigates the interrelationship between total government expenditure and total tax revenue in Barbados using both bivariate and multivariate cointegrating models. The technique of Granger Causality is also applied to determine the causal relationship in the multivariate model. The results from the multivariate error correction model suggest that government expenditure unidirectional Granger-cause changes in revenue. * Corresponding Author: Tracy Maynard, Research Department, Central Bank of Barbados, Tom Adams Financial Centre, P.O. Empirical Test of the Relationship between Government's Power to Collect Taxes, Tax Revenues and Government Expenditures in Iran
According to the Kau and Rubin (K&R) hypothesis, increasing the government's power to collect taxes, through increased tax revenues, expand the public sector expenditure. In this regard, the main objective of this paper is to empirically test the relationship between government's power to collect taxes, tax revenues and government expenditures in Iran during the period of 1971-2013. متن کاملOn the Causal Relationship between Government Expenditure and Tax Revenue in Pakistan
This paper applies the technique of Granger Causality to determine the relationship between total government expenditures and total tax revenue using annual revised estimates. The analysis discovers a firm unidirectional effect from expenditure to revenue suggesting the preference of controlling the spending decisions to reduce the tax revenue-expenditure deficit.
متن کاملThe Asymmetric Effects of Tax Revenues on Government Expenditures in Iran
The tax-expenditure hypothesis posed by Milton Friedman emphasizes a positive causal relationship between government tax revenues and government expenditures. If citizens do not have a correct perception of the real tax burden and under-estimate the price of public goods and services, there is a negative causal relationship between tax revenues and government expenditures, which indicates exist...
